Verizon SAS 70 Data Center Audits

Posted in sas-70, verizon on May 24th, 2011 by FrankM – Comments Off

Verizon completed its annual SAS 70 Type II data center audits to assess the effectiveness of the company’s controls.  …

…   “Fifteen of Verizon’s premium Internet data centers in North America – including facilities in California, Georgia, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia – completed successful examinations for the sixth consecutive year.  A facility in Irving, Texas, passed its examination for the third year.  Also successfully examined were five premium data centers in four cities (Hong Kong, Melbourne, Singapore and Sydney); six centers in five cities (Amsterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt, London and Milan); and two in Canada.

SAS 70 is a widely recognized auditing standard performed by a certified public accounting firm.  It is conducted in accordance with the standards set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  These reports included the examination of specific areas such as: organizational structure, governance and administration; physical access to facilities; logical access to systems; network services; and operational processes and environmental safeguards.  The results of these examinations demonstrate that Verizon has the controls and processes in place to manage and monitor its data centers and infrastructure for enterprises around the globe.”   …

Telus is investing $65 million into a Tier III Intelligent Internet Data Centre in Rimouski, Quebec.  The facility will integrate green design to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification.

Skanska will build the green data center with a target rating Power Usage Effectiveness, or PUE,  of 1.15.  …

…   “Rimouski is an ideal location for TELUS’ Intelligent Internet Data Centre because of the city’s highly skilled and dynamic workforce. By choosing to build the facility in Rimouski, TELUS can also benefit from one of Quebec’s unique advantages, its hydroelectric power — an abundant source of green energy.

Rimouski’s moderate climate also contributes to lower energy requirements for the building’s cooling and heating systems. Furthermore, locating the facility more than 250 kilometres from large city centres offers TELUS’ business clients the benefits of greater geographic diversity and improved business continuity.”   …

Updated metrics for datacenter efficiency measurements

Posted in data-center-efficiency-program, green-grid, green-power, low-power, metrics, pue, servers on May 17th, 2011 by FrankM – Comments Off

The Green Grid has posted updated guidelines for applying its PUE, or Power Usage Effectiveness, metric.  The update includes specific recommendations for how to measure and calculate PUE in mixed-use data center facilities and introduces a condenser water source energy weighting factor.

Enhanced principles are introduced into the measurement definitions:

…   “When calculating PUE, IT energy consumption should, at a minimum, be measured at the output of the uninterruptible power supply (UPS). However, the industry will continue to improve measurement capabilities so that measurement of IT energy consumption directly at the IT load (e.g., servers, storage, network, etc.) becomes the common practice.”   …
