VMware acquires Zimbra to further its IT simplification mission with virtual appliances for collaboration platforms. …

… “Virtual appliances are just virtual machines pre-populated with an operating system and applications that can be downloaded and easily started without installation and with minimal configuration. Once deployed onto VMware vSphere, the Zimbra virtual appliance will automatically benefit from the built-in VMware vSphere scalability, availability, and security services. We see this on-premise virtual appliance distribution and deployment model as a very simple yet effective approach for providing employees with collaboration capabilities, especially for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). ” …

VMware touts the impact of server virtualization on green IT. …

… “VMware virtual infrastructure helps enterprises and governments reduce their energy costs and consumption by as much as 80 percent. Most desktops and servers today are in use only eight to 15 percent of the time they are turned on, yet they consume 60 to 90 percent of the normal workload power even when idle. VMware vSphere has advanced resource and memory management features that will enable consolidation ratios of 15:1 or more and dynamically power off unneeded servers, which increase hardware utilization to as much as 85 percent.

Every server retired from a datacenter saves an estimated four tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to taking 1.5 cars off the road or planting 55 trees. Similar opportunities for savings are available for desktop PCs, which can be consolidated on servers in the datacenter using VMware View. VMware vSphere 4 is expected to be generally available during the second quarter of 2009. ” …

VMware CEO Paul Maritz discusses the company’s strategy and roadmap for enabling the internal cloud computing infrastructure that inter-operates with external cloud services through a private cloud, sharing service capacity. …

… “Maritz discussed and demonstrated three key enabling components for building a private cloud: the complete virtualization of the datacenter through a Virtual Datacenter Operating System (VDC-OS), the extensions of the VDC-OS and the management layer to enable service providers to deliver external clouds and federate with internal clouds. A private cloud brings unprecedented levels of flexibility, control, efficiency, resiliency, and manageability to datacenters and allows any application – legacy, server-based, desktop or those built on new application frameworks – to be delivered as a service. ” …
